We celebrated by barbecuing in the backyard on my new grill (it's great), talking to our daughter by phone as she was on the Esplanade in Boston waiting for the fireworks to begin, taking a nice walk outside at the edge of dusk. Oh yeah, and watching endless versions of Independence Day, complete with trailers, documentaries on the "Making Of"and other behind the scenes goodies for the 1996 movie. (Okay, I'll admit to watching most of The Guardian again tonight, too. And I have to say that between that and Deadliest Catch, I have come to a position of great respect for the men and women of the US Coast Guard. Hi, Paul -- no insults for you this time, only respect!)

All in all, a pleasant, low-key non event of a day appropriate for reflection that we live in a country stuffed with awesome men and women. Once we've cleaned up the mess in Washington, perhaps we can remind the rest of the world just how great all of us in the species Homo sapiens are truly capable of being.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-07-05T03:21:33Z</dcterms:modified>

Jasper White's Summer Shack

Every once in a while there comes along a taste, a smell, a fleeting glimpse that stimulates the memory center of the brain. Sometimes the memories are terrible. Just ask someone with PTSD. But sometimes, the memories unlock something wonderful.

I have the latter experience at Jasper White's Summer Shack. Recently I had the opportunity to go to the Cambridge restaurant for my birthday. Everything we ordered was unbelieveably delicious. Mr. White's slogan is "Food is Love" and with every bite, the love poured out. The cornbread brought to the table is moist and not too heavy. The oysters were fresh and delicious, each variety tasting subtly different but overall with that briny cold goodness of the ocean. The Shack Bouillabaisse is crammed with mussels, lobster, clams, squid and fin fish in a broth that is so well-seasoned that each mouthful is pleasure in a spoon. The meatloaf is homey and flavorful. The clam chowder is a thinner New England version (no, tomatoes do NOT belong in clam chowder) that showcases the goodness of the tender clams and potatoes that are not allowed to be mushy. A Bermuda fish and crab chowder is the antithesis of the New England variety with a little spice and a pleasant earthiness. I could go on and on reciting what's great at the Summer Shack.

The happiest part of the Summer Shack for me are the memories evoked by the seemingly simple dishes. I had a steamed lobster with an ear of corn on the cob. This was the sweetest, tastiest lobster I'd had maybe since I was a kid. And the corn was tender and flavorful, like it had been picked moments before cooking. It should be easy to get lobster and corn right, but it's not. But wait, there's more. One of the special desserts that evening was strawberry shortcake. Nope, no cheesy spongecake with defrosted presweetened watery strawberries and a squirt of some canned "wip" on top. For my birthday I had strawberry shortcake made with the real home-made style biscuit, not too sweet, split and filled with generous slices of fresh strawberries, a sprinkling of sugar and a big spoonful of whipped cream. One mouthful, and I was transported back in time to perhaps the age of 8, to the annual Fourth of July "event" my in hometown that featured barbecued chicken, lobster, baseball and fireworks at dusk. The shortcake was spot-on to one that my grandmother would have made.

Tears rolled down my cheeks and I have to admit, that meal made this one of the best birthdays ever.

Since then, I have been back and was not disappointed. The food is so great, the restaurant is so relaxing and everyone, from the greeter at the front of the house to the runners to the wait staff and beyond is happy to see you, and eager to make your meal the best dining experience you could possibly have. The Summer Shack in Cambridge is located in the repurposed former Aku-Aku Polynesian restaurant on Alewife Brook Parkway. There are also locations in Boston's Back Bay, Logan Airport, and at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Visit their website http://www.summershackrestaurant.com/index.asp then visit the restaurants. Be prepared for the realization that indeed, "Food is Love."

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-30T20:47:01Z</dcterms:modified>

WALL•E

Just got back from a midnight showing of Pixar's newest feature-length film "WALL•E" and I've gotta say it may just have catapulted itself into the position of my favorite Pixar flick yet. The animation is fantastic (of course) and the appeal of the little industrial robot who is the star of the film is undeniable.

Once again, Pixar has managed to show us our humanity by way of a non-human protagonist. I won't spoil it for any of you who are going to see it but I will say that when the lights go down in the theater, be prepared to make contact with a number of our once cutting-edge technological toys as well as to reestablish a warm acceptance and affection for our own human heart.

Thank you, Pixar. And thank you, WALL•E.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-28T06:44:34Z</dcterms:modified>

When We Left Earth Conclusion

Last night the family watched the conclusion of Discovery's "When We Left Earth." It left all of us wishing that the series had been longer, that it had been aired earlier in the day so that youngsters would be able to watch it, and that it had been indeed available in high definition as Discovery promised. It was only aired in digital here, not on the HD channels for which we pay extra. The end of the series left us feeling that so much history was omitted from this retelling. The newly unarchived footage was fantastic but I'm sure there was miles and miles and miles more of it.

Perhaps this was merely a six-hour commercial for the DVD boxed set? I don't like to think so but I never know what to make of marketing schemes.

And by the way, since, through no fault of my own, I missed my chance to chat with Gene Cernan, if you're out there, Captain Cernan, give me a shout. I'd love to listen to your perspectives for a few hours and ask you a couple dozen questions of my own.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-23T20:59:37Z</dcterms:modified>

Milli Vanilli at Fenway Park

Friday night saw the Red Sox organization pay tribute to the NBA Champion Boston Celtics (oh yeah, I love seeing that in print again) by wearing green uniform shirts and mowing a shamrock into the center field grass. Awesome!

An added attraction was the rain delay during which duck boats carrying the Celtics and several trophies drove around Fenway. And a further entertainment for the Fenway Faithful came in the persons of Jonathan Papelbon and Manny Delcarmen, in the guise of Milli Vanilli, appropriately lip syncing "Blame it on the Rain." Gotta love Boston sports!!!

The expanse of concrete and brick that seems as though it could serve as a trebuchet launching area during a siege lends itself really well to this annual event. I went last year and this year has even more tasty goodness to enjoy.

As an added attraction yesterday, the Celtics Rolling Rally in celebration of their 17th NBA Championship went happily down Cambridge Street at lunchtime, garnering shouts of encouragement and thanks from Beach Party revelers as well as the businesspeople in suits who usually populate the buildings in that area. It was a real thrill seeing the men in green with the trophies. Yes, Paul Pierce was there waving his well-deserved MVP hardware for all to see.

But back to the Phantom's Barbecue Beach Party. This year, the boys in purple have brought in 10 champion barbecue purveyors from as far a away as Australia and as near as Quincy. Fantastic! My favorite ribs came from Johnson's Bar-B-Que out of Chesapeake, Virginia. Smoky, with just the right balance of spice and sweetness. And their cornbread, right out of the pan yesterday morning was moist, dense and bursting with good corn flavor. A great contrast to all the pork being cooked was the Shrimp off the Barbie from the Awesome Aussie Barbecue Team of New South Wales. They offer sauces that are fruit-based instead of the tomato-based ones we commonly find in the US. Imagine Raspberry Chipotle. The shrimp came several on a stick and were juicy, tender, cooked just right.

I have to tell you about the best pulled pork I've ever had -- from Jack's Down Home Barbecue, Philadelphia. Wow. The best. Cooked low and slow over smoke created by what looked to be chunks of apple wood, no wimpy little shavings from a bag here, these were big branches chopped into manageable-sized pieces. And Jack is just as naturally folksy and approachable as his products. I had the chance to chat with him and negotiated the purchase of a bulk quantity of pulled pork which is being wolfed down in my house for dinner tonight.

There is non-barbecue there too, Wholly Cannoli from Worcester has a staggering array of delicious cannoli and if you've never had a crisp shell filled with lightly-sweetened ricotta, then don't miss these. Strega Slush has carts in strategic places. Check out their watermelon slush. Firefly's Barbecue offers a side of macaroni and cheese that is baked, delicious, creamy and full of cheesy flavor and goodness. (Don't miss the Bulldawg either, featuring a half pound hot dog made by Pearl of Boston and covered with pulled pork and cheese.)

There's live music at night, an honest-to-goodness beach of trucked-in sand on the plaza, a beer garden and more good humor and fun than you might expect in a "big city" event. The enthusiasm of Dan and Dave Andelman is infectious and permeates the crowd. The Barbecue Beach Party continues tonight, all day tomorrow and Sunday from 10 AM to 11 PM. Get there early and you won't have to stand in line too long!

Can't wait until next year! Now, where was that exercise video . . .

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-21T00:12:06Z</dcterms:modified>

Celtics Win Number 17!

It's been twenty-two years since the 1986 NBA Finals. Twenty-two years since the Celtics won their sixteenth NBA championship. Twenty-two years since the NBA championship was won in Boston. And tonight, the ancient and honorable gods of the Celtics (where are you when we need you, Johnny Most?) proved that they were not left behind when the old Garden was torn down. The Celtics gods came out of the rafters and helped power the team to a 39-point victory over their long-time rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.

Bird and Parish and McHale and Ainge were in the garden the last time. Tonight it's Pierce and Garnett and Allen and Rondo. Well, Danny Ainge is there as well. What a good job Doc Rivers and he have done with the team. I don't even feel justified in naming only a few names. These Celtics played as a team. Plain and simple, but so important. Teamwork, solid defense and in-control offense were the secret. In other words, classic and classy Celtics basketball.

The recent statement by Fred Hobbs, a Democratic Party Executive Committee member in the state of Tennessee says he is distrusting of Senator Barack Obama and will not endorse him. Why?

". . . I don't exactly approve of a lot of the things he stands for and I'm not sure we know enough about him. He's got some bad connections, and he may be terrorist connected for all I can tell. It sounds kind of like he may be." (The City Paper, Nashville, TN http://www.nashvillecitypaper.com/news.php?viewStory=60813)

Many readers of The City Paper commented that Mr. Hobbs is a dinosaur. That may be so, but is that an excuse for a Party official spreading rumors and inuendos about his own party's candidate? Instead of just standing by and clucking our tongues like the "pick a little, talk a little" gals in Meredith Wilson's The Music Man, it's time for us as registered voters (never mind your party affiliation) to stand up and demand better. This kind of smearing of the lens of truth is unhealthy for American politics and serves only as a distraction from the real issues at hand.

Get some facts. Get them straight in your mind. Get away from talking trash and exposing your ignorance. And if that doesn't work for you, go home Mr. Hobbs.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-16T15:23:44Z</dcterms:modified>

Godspeed, Tim Russert

I'm struck by the category in which I'm filing this entry, for "News and Politics" was the bread and butter of the recently departed Tim Russert, Washington Bureau Chief for NBC News. Mr. Russert was a class act, a journalist of great integrity and an ardent lover of life. No matter the position of political rivals who appeared with him, he was honest, respectful and listened to what they had to say before chiming in with his next pointed, insightful question.

I offer my condolences to his family.

Around this house, none of us know what we're going to do on Sunday mornings without him. Meet the Press is an integral part of our weekend. Tim Russert's deft handling of both interviews and debates on that show and on the recent Presidential primary evenings was masterful and a joy to watch.

What will the Bills do without him urging them on every Sunday during football season? His was a unique and precious ability. He will be missed.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-14T01:18:41Z</dcterms:modified>

Scouts, Be Prepared!

I have never been more pleased to be a registered BSA Scout leader than I am today. On the heels of the disaster of a tornado blasting through the Little Sioux Scout Ranch in Iowa, the boys who were there for leadership training reacted and responded the way they have been taught their whole Scouting lives. (I could call it a career, but Scouting is a lifestyle for sure.) I watched Ann Curry interview several boys and their parents this morning on the Today show. One boy in particular made statements that stood out in vivid relief. He said that it was a good thing that the tornado touched down in the Scout camp because they were trained on how to handle shock and how to put on a tourniquet and to apply pressure to wounds with gauze. In other words, they were PREPARED. Some boys sheltered others with their bodies during the tornado's wrath. Others set up triage afterward and worked hard to free their brother Scouts.

News media report the collective and individual actions as heroic. Indeed they are. Before emergency services could arrive, the boys and their leaders began administering first aid (as one of the boys said, "we ALL know first aid.") and cleaning up the devastation. They reacted calmly because they had drilled and trained and learned and then drilled some more. I think back to when my boys were in Scouts (one of them was a Senior Patrol Leader at 13) and realize that their calm, resolute way of handling crises can be traced directly back to what they learned in Scouting. So the behavior of these boys and leaders doesn't surprise me necessarily, but it does provide validation of the program.

The Boy Scouts of America have taken a lot of hits in recent memory. Scoutmasters violating trust, BSA ruling that you have to believe in something greater than yourself, BSA not wanting gay Scouts or Leaders (which I openly, albeit quietly, rebelled against by having my troop help to host World AIDS Day and making it known to our sponsoring organization that our troop would never subscribe to that backward tenet). But what we have to remember is that the training included in the program of Scouting is life-altering for many boys. The current and future leaders at the Little Sioux Scout Ranch illustrated this with their very lives. Lord Robert Baden-Powell would have been proud.

Update: The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America has posted the following statement on its website: "Anyone interested in making a donation to help rebuild Scouting in the communities affected by the tornadoes and flooding in the Midwest go to www.scoutingfriends.org. Select 'BSA Disaster Relief.' "

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-26T20:39:41Z</dcterms:modified>

When We Left Earth

Yes, it's true. I'm so ready to go. When NASA starts searching for a middle-aged published poet grandma who managed to graduate with honors from a top university without taking a math class, I should be at the top of the list. I'm ready. I've been ready.

But until then I have to rely on television and movies and simulators (Space Camp is not out of the running for my next vacation destination -- start packaging that one, Orbitz). Last year for my birthday the Mission: Space attraction at Disney World that emulated liftoff and a truncated flight to Mars made me even more jazzed about going into space. Later in the summer the movie In the Shadow of the Moon by Ron Howard gave me a chance to see lots of footage on the big screen, revealing in a new way the beauty and awesome emptiness of space. This spring I was privileged to meet Alan Bean and hear him speak on his art as well as his experiences with space travel. That evening left me on cloud nine for days. My husband has just given me a DVD called Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon, presented by Tom Hanks. That will probably be a worthy prelude to watching the premiere of the Discovery Channel series "When We Left Earth".

Perhaps the appeal of the space program is peculiar to my generation who watched with fascination most every launch of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo from our diverse schoolrooms in small towns, big cities and rural enclaves, that we were inspired by the audacity of NASA's programs. They took us from being Earth-bound to playing among the stars. Perhaps we think it's important for our children and their children to know of the determination of the country of the United States, as well as the vision of the American people to make exploration beyond the shelter of our own planet a reality.

Perhaps soon there will be opportunities for "average" people to slip the surly bonds of earth. But if they make us stand in line for the opportunity like they did for recess, I want to be first.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-08T21:31:27Z</dcterms:modified>

Obama Clinches Nomination

Four years ago I watched Barack Obama address the Democratic National Convention and remarked to my husband that he was going to be our first black president. Tonight, it seems that the entire country is one step closer to fulfilling this exciting possibility of hope.

I am deeply saddened that the American media across the board have focussed on Barack's faith to the point of his having to leave his church. The misunderstandings abound about the way a United Church of Christ functions. Each member of the congregation is assumed to have a brain and thoughts of his or her own. Each member of the congregation is tasked with using his or her innate talents and abilities to bring about the glorification of God through the creation of social justice for all people.

Barack has done nothing more subversive than to answer the call to service of his country. Service knows no boundaries of color, gender or affiliation. Service only asks that we be brave in giving of ourselves to something greater.

I applaud both his decision to keep his membership in Trinity Church as long as he could and also his thoughtful and, I'm sure, painful move to distance himself from that congregation. This move shows once again how well-qualified Barack is to be the leader of our nation.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-01T12:52:56Z</dcterms:modified>

It's a Jeep!

On my way home this evening I was driving behind a white SUV. We got to a place where the road is torn up and under construction. It's been under construction for I think three years. Before we got there, a heavy rain fell and left puddles in some of the low-lying gravel-filled ruts in the road. This isn't full of pot holes or mortar holes or fox holes, it's just a little uneven and water can tend to gather. By the time we hit this part of the road, the sun was shining again and glinting off the puddles of water. It's kind of pretty if you can overlook the jouncing motion of your car.

But now I'm seeing the oddest behavior from the driver of the SUV in front of me. He's SWERVING to AVOID the PUDDLES. I watched, puzzled for a moment as to what was going on. Then another shallow puddle appeared and he did it again! SWERVING to AVOID the PUDDLES of water. Before I knew it, I had exclaimed, "It's a Jeep! They were built to be combat vehicles!"

Amazingly, I tend to think this behavior has become the norm for SUV owners. They don't have these vehicles to fulfill their original purpose, namely that of driving over rough, inhospitable terrain that a regular automobile would have difficulty with because of the low chassis and short wheelbase. Jeeps were vehicles that lead the charge in World War II, more agile than tanks or half tracks but just as game. Of course, those Jeeps weren't painted white with fiberglas bumpers, cushy leather seats and cup holders. But their latter-day cousins, the late-model Jeep SUVs, are built tough enough to drive through a puddle. After all, my 16-year-old Subaru can.

It seems that the letter to the next President Of The United States written by consensus at the Computers, Freedom and Privacy 08 Conference has been finished and is in the process of being signed. While I laud the monumental efforts made to combine the thoughts offered by many disparate viewpoints, and while I have signed the letter in its current form, I have to add that perhaps the next time something like this is undertaken, the signing process should use a method that less resembles the game of auto polo (see photo). With all the technology available and with all the knowhow pervading this Conference, a simple instruction as to how to sign electronically given to attendees and organizers and speakers alike would have obsoleted the necessity of sheets of paper filled with (sometimes) illegible chicken scratching.

I'm sad to criticise the endgame of this process because I think the idea is a great one. Get people of like minds and divergent backgrounds together in the same room and task them with devising a technology policy for the presidential administration. Obviously not every thought could be quoted precisely, but the energy, the sincerity and the expertise translated well. We have learned a great deal by doing this and should be able to apply these lessons to future endeavours.

Perhaps at CFP 09 this kind of communique can be delivered to the doors of 1600 Pensylvania Avenue. Or perhaps we will have elected a Leader who will have responded to the letter as it has been written this week and there will be no need for additional activism. One can only hope.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-25T12:31:24Z</dcterms:modified>

Blogging for Privacy

Just got back less than an hour ago from the Computers, Freedom and Privacy 08 Conference (CFP08) held this year in New Haven. Only went for 2 days but wow, it was GREAT. So much talk of civil liberties, freedom of expression and holding the feet of government in general (and the new president in particular) to the civil libertarian fire. It's been a good many years since I had any meaningful interaction with activism (probably since the 1992 Democratic primaries when I met and worked for Bob Kerrey) and I have to say that the last couple days have galvanized me anew.

Once I get a decent night's sleep I'll see about writing about more of my impressions.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-22T04:59:22Z</dcterms:modified>

BBT Season Finale

"Schrödinger's cat is alive!

I was recently e-mailed a survey from Apple wanting to know how my recent in-store repair went. First of all, there's no way to tell which piece of hardware they're interested in or whether it was a hardware or software issue. The following is an excerpt from the comment box section of the survey.

I am compelled to tell you that the term "Genius" applied to a technician still does not make that person a genius. This repair to my iMac was due to a faulty power supply which required the motherboard be replaced. After I told the "Genius" who waited on me that the machine would not start up I felt that he treated me in a condescending manner. That is not the way to win friends (or customers) and influence people positively. I told the person that the machine wouldn't start and indeed it did not. I even diagnosed the problem for him. I had this replaced once before at a different location and they were great to me. Not everyone who comes in for tech support at an Apple store is a technology neophyte. We would like to be treated with respect. When I brought in the iPod last week it was not the first time. I had brought it in before and the "Genius" couldn't make it malfunction in any useful way so he requested I "bring it back when it's doing the malfunction." If you don't live next door to the Apple store, that's not an option. The "Genius" I spoke with last week was kind, considerate, listened when I talked and didn't treat me as if I had either lost my mind or never touched a computer product before. Please spend more time instructing your "Genius"es on techniques for personal interaction. "Think different" should not be a synonym for "Be dismissive."

Now, I don't expect that this will make any more difference than the constructive criticism I e-mailed to the T last week after being stranded for an hour waiting for a bus that didn't show up, but I do wish that Apple will at some point (SOON) get rid of their cult of calling a guy with a screwdriver and a manual a "Genius." It's just not that impressive.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-19T21:11:37Z</dcterms:modified>

Happy Mother's Day

Thus all things were kindred, and were brought together by the same Great Mystery."

-- Luther Standing Bear, Chief of the Oglala, Lakota (1905-1939)

While waiting for the bus yesterday, I observed three incipient mass transit riders complaining vociferously to a man in a T uniform about the dangerous bees that were threatening them. "I'm afraid of bees!" "They shouldn't be here!" "You need to do something!" "Just moving the trash can won't help!" "I don't want to get stung!"

You get the idea.

The "threatening" hoard was two (count 'em) bumble bees that seemed enamored with floating fairly noiselessly on the breeze wafting past the overhang of the bus terminal building. They appeared to be enjoying themselves. They weren't dive-bombing anyone. They had no interest in the trash cans like yellow jackets (wasps) do and had less interest in the people waiting to board busses.

My impression is that the average person has no knowledge of the diversity of insect species, nor interest in gathering any, and therefore lumps all flying yellow bugs with a vague buzzing sound into the DANGEROUS KILLER BEE category. I understand someone who is allergic being more circumspect than the rest of us, but this all-out fear and loathing is unsettling. Amid the calls to get an exterminator to kill the bees because they might be nesting in the soffit of the building there was no awareness that this is the bumble bees' territory. We were just standing in it. And the bees weren't being aggressive, mostly not taking note of the humans. One man standing there took a notebook from his briefcase and waved it around, hitting himself in the head, and doing more damage to himself than the bumble bees did.

With the recent news of colony collapse disorder plaguing honey bees, might it not make more sense to see the planet we live on as an integrated system? We have a niche in it to be sure, but we are not the only species living here. It has been said that if the bees become extinct, mankind is sure to follow. But I think that people of the ilk of these bus patrons will still be standing with their eyes closed and their spray cans of insecticide blasting away as the planet dies around them. And once the planet dies, are we not doomed as well?

Wake up and open your eyes. You are part of the world, as vulnerable as a bee or a manatee. And you have as much potential as any other species to live in harmony with all living things. Unmitigated war on one part of the ecosystem we call Earth is like hitting ourselves in the head. Leave the bees alone.
<img src="http://c.services.spaces.live.com/CollectionWebService/c.gif?cid=6295945578045632994&page=RSS%3a+Bee+Nice&referrer=" width="1px" height="1px" border="0"
